tiefsaits is a young, Berlin-based ensemble specializing in historical low-pitched string instruments such as the Baroque cello, viola da gamba, and violoncello piccolo. The three musicians perform a wide-ranging repertoire spanning from the Renaissance to the Romantic period, exploring the sound of low-pitched, three-part ensemble playing as well as the evolution of the cello throughout music history.
The ensemble combines historical performance practice with contemporary perspectives. It performs rarely heard original works as well as its own arrangements, and regularly collaborates with contemporary composers. In its programs, tiefsaits also addresses social and philosophical themes, such as time, memory, or the climate crisis, often through interdisciplinary collaborations with other art forms.
Supported by the Berlin Senat, Kulturfunk Lübeck, and the German Orchestra Foundation, among others, the ensemble has performed at festivals such as the AEQUINOX Festival, the Heinrich Schütz Musikfest Dresden, and the Telemann Sommerfest Magdeburg. In 2024, their debut album À TRE, featuring cello trios by Joseph Dall’Abaco, was released by Da Vinci Records.
